people all the great things libraries have to offer? The New Jersey State Library Talking Book & Braille

Center is seeking an hourly Library Associate in the Reader’s Services department. The ideal candidate will

have customer service and reader’s advisory skills as well as written and verbal communication skills.

Computer proficiency is required. Under the direction of a professional librarian, responsibilities will include

providing reader’s advisory to adults, basic computer and technology assistance, assisting librarians with

outreach and presentations, coordinating book discussions, and staying up to date on current trends in

libraries.

 

Responsibilities:
 

The individual will function in a customer services capacity assisting TBBC's print disabled population in the

selection of books, digital machine questions, and general questions related to services.
 

-Serves as primary contact for patrons interacting with the Talking Book & Braille Center ('TBBC').

-Responsible for one-to-one contact with patrons via telephone, mail, email and in person.

-Responds to incoming calls throughout the day or as scheduled.

-Advises patrons in the selection of books.

-Research general reference questions.

-Keeps patron computerized request files current and processes request lists received by mail, phone, or in

person.

-Keeps patron records accurate and current. Reviews new reader applications and initiates contacts.

-Creates computer profiles on new readers and updates current profiles.

-Contacts prospective new patrons via email or telephone when they have expressed an interest in TBBC

service.

-Confers with professional librarian or other supervisory official regarding the establishment of proper

standards and recommendations for the organization and implementation of the technical aspects of the

library or program area.

-Takes the lead in tasks assigned to support staff and volunteers.

-Participates in the training of patrons and staff on the use of library resources.

-Resolves patron concerns within authority granted by the professional librarian of other supervisory official.

-Participates in library committees and teams.

-Provides basic reader advisory to patrons seeking aid in the selection of reading materials.

-Prepares reading lists and bibliographies.

-Answers basic reference questions.

-Conducts or prepares the content and arrangement of library materials for displays, exhibits and library

programs.

-May use online cataloguing equipment to maintain catalogue system including corrections, additions, new

copies and or editions and removal of items from inventory.

-Prepares correspondence.

-Prepares technical, financial, statistical and other reports.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

-Knowledge of techniques used to gather data and information.

-Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

-Ability to instruct others in the use of research methods and tools.

-Ability to compile data.

-Ability to provide reader's advisory after a period of training.

-Ability to conduct surveys and studies and prepare reports.

-Ability to prepare correspondence.

-Ability to maintain records and files.

-Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the

agency, office, or related units.

-Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this

position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

 

Preferred Requirements:
 

-Knowledge of popular fiction and non-fiction is essential.

-General understanding of special needs of people with visual handicaps and other disabilities is highly

desired.

-Ability to consistently perform detailed work with a high level of accuracy is necessary.

-Ability to communicate (orally and in writing) and interact with the public is essential.

-Competence in the use of personal computers and familiarity with library automation processes are

essential.

-Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information

systems used by the agency, office, or related units.

Requirements:
 

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree.

-This is an hourly position, the maximum number of hours per week is 21, and hours will be scheduled

Monday to Friday between 8:00 and 3:30.
